Glenis, Ian and Aidan
“On meeting Aidan, a very active 8 year old with Down Syndrome, we were a little apprehensive, but were soon put at ease as he came running through the door – he simply loves people!
On his third visit we’d bought a poodle puppy, Milo, and we had to watch Aidan closely with the puppy, but now Milo’s tail wags as soon as Aidan walks in the door! They’re good playmates for each other. As we live at North Haven we spend time on the beach, feeding the seagulls and digging in the sand. We have also had lots of fun times with Aidan at the zoo, circus, puzzle park and picnics. He really has a happy disposition and loves to “help” around the house.
We are really glad we have joined the Interchange program! We think it is excellent for Aidan and also for us as host parents. We enjoy doing things we’d never do on our own! We look forward to lots of happy years ahead with Aidan.
Annette, Shane, Scarlett, Riley and Jared
“Once a month we are all fortunate to have a small adventure with a little boy named Jared. We say “adventure” because we relate the word to fun, exploration and discovery! When Jared comes for a weekend he comes with much more than an overnight bag; he also comes with smiles, energy and a genuine sense of affection to spend time with us. It is especially rewarding to see how well Jared and our two children mix, whether it is going somewhere as a group, playing in the local park, or just messing around the house and yard. Our “three amigos” laugh and whoop it up once a month! It is a busy but immensely rewarding time!”
Maria – and Lucy
“Choosing to become a host parent is by far one of the most gratifying life choices I have ever made. I have gained enormously from my experience with Lucy, particularly an understanding of children with special needs. Lucy is a beautiful and spirited child and a complete credit to her compassionate and strong minded parents. They have much to be applauded for, particularly for their patience, courage and love. I wish to thank Interchange for the opportunity to be part of its community.”
Phylis, Jim and Rohan
“What a wonderful privilege it is to be part of a program that not only enriches the lives of children but also allows people like us to add to our family! We are host parents to Rohan, the most gorgeous 8 year old boy! He has brought so much love and excitement into our lives. He likes to be busy all the time; we play shops, play dough and paint. Rohan is also Port Power mad and takes great delight in teasing us because we follow the Crows! We have also cared for Jim’s 80 year old father who has Alzheimer’s. Rohan calls him “old dad” and they colour in together,do the dishes and put them away. Rohan makes “old dad” Milo and a picnic of lollies, marshmallows, bananas, cheese and vegemite sandwiches.
We thank Interchange from the bottom of our hearts for giving us the privilege to be involved as a host family, and we thank Rohan’s family for allowing us to share his life.”
